Eusebio Leal, who has been a historian of Havana for years and has led numerous heads of state and government through the streets of the Cuban capital, died of a painful illness this Friday at the age of 77 “”
“Comrade Eusebio Leal Spengler died in the morning hours of this Friday as the victim of a painful illness,” announced the official newspaper ‘Granma’ and said that funeral services would be reported in the next few hours.
Born in Habanero, he studied history in Cuba and specialized in the restoration of historical centers in Italy. He started working in Havana City Council in 1959 and only ten years after becoming director of the City Museum.
Leal was responsible for directing much of the restoration work for the historic center of Havana, including the Government House, the Casa Particular, and the Palace of the General Captains. He was also responsible for the work in the fortress of San Carlos de La Cabaña and in the castle of the three kings of El Morro.
