The Emir of Kuwait, Saba al Ahmad al Jaber al Saba, has died at the age of 91, the Kuwaiti royal family announced on Tuesday, which has not disclosed details of the causes of death.
The Kuwaiti royal family announced the death of Al Saba “with great regret”. “We pray to Almighty God that the deceased may be covered in his mercy and live in his breadth,” he added.
Al Sabá was brought to the United States for medical treatment in July after undergoing unspecified surgery days earlier. The authorities had since indicated that his health had improved.
The 91-year-old emir has controlled this oil-rich Gulf country since 2006. He was rushed to a US hospital while on a trip there last year. Although Kuwait has one of the most active parliaments in the Arab world, the emir retains most of the power, including the right to appoint the government.
