At least 16 soldiers from the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic died this Sunday as a result of the escalation of hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan in this border region in the South Caucasus.
Nagorno Karabakh President Araik Arutiunián has announced on his Facebook page that “dozen” military personnel have died or been injured. “There are dozens of civilians injured and there are also deaths,” he added.
Arutiunián reported that Azerbaijan had used “Turkish F-16 fighters” in its offensive, which arrived in the country “a month ago” under “the pretext of participating in some exercises”.
Although Arutiunian did not specify the number of soldiers killed first, the Nagorno-Karabakh Ministry of Defense subsequently disclosed the identity of the soldiers to the Armenian press.
