Donetsk denounces a possible offensive by the Ukrainian army in the east

The self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) denounced this Monday that the Ukrainian army is preparing an offensive on the Donbass region in the east of the country.

“We have established that Ukrainian troops are stationed in the region as part of a joint operation. They are preparing to launch an offensive on Donbass,” a spokesman for the DPR People’s Militia told Sputnik.

Thus, he pointed out that the commanders of the Ukrainian Armed Forces received orders to remain in temporary deployment positions while “tankers are urgently released from hospitals.”

In this sense, he has warned that military inspectors are stationed in the area to “check the preparations”. “We have also received reports that about 40 Ukrainian special forces soldiers trained by British advisers went to Avdeevka (a city controlled by Ukrainian forces, several kilometers from Donetsk) to investigate the situation,” he said.

However, the Ukrainian army has ensured that any troop concentrations in the area are just “military manoeuvres” planned in advance. Since April 2014, Ukrainian troops have been conducting operations against pro-Russian separatists in the region.

The Minsk agreements laid the foundation for a political solution to the conflict, but so far have not led to an end to the violence. The hostilities have so far claimed around 13,000 lives, according to UN estimates.

Russia has warned Ukraine and the international community about the possible consequences of a military settlement and denounced that arms sales to Ukraine are inciting Kiev to use force to settle the conflict.
