On January 1, commercial establishments were banned from giving single-use plastic bags to their customers, which has created confusion among micro, small and medium enterprises.

According to the new Solid Waste Law of Mexico City, the plastic bags that can be used are the following:
1.- Use of plastic bags for food delivery. For meat products, raw vegetables, bulk products, fish and shellfish, perishable foods and dairy products. This is to avoid any risk of food contamination.
2.- Use of plastic bags for medical use. Given the need for good management of medical waste and to reduce the risk of contamination.
3.- Bags to prolong the life of food. Considerations related to food hygiene and safety, and to avoid wasting them, since perishables are better kept in bags.
4.- Garbage bags. For health reasons.
The legislation establishes that these types of bags are allowed: “For reasons of safety, health, health, sanitation, which prevent food waste, medical use and safety of other products; as long as they don't have a technologically viable alternative. ”
