Demonstration in France against the closure of a Renault plant

Thousands of people demonstrated this Saturday in Maubeuge, northern France, after the factory that was the site of the giant Renault, which had 2,100 employees, was shut down on Friday. Renault’s plan is to lay off 15,000 people worldwide, including 4,600 in France.

The demonstrators have gathered outside the factory since 10 a.m. and called from the unions CGT, CFDT, CFTC, CFE-CGC and Sud. They have marched to the headquarters of the Maubeuge city council about 6 kilometers away, reports the French television BFMTV.

Renault’s plan is to move production of Kangoo electric vehicles to Douai, about 70 kilometers away, to France.

“They told us that we are the best factory in Europe. We had nothing to fear. And today they tell us that we will close to move everything to Douai. We cannot allow it,” said a factory worker, Jean -Marc Pelleriaux. 61 years old.
