Democratic Party and M5S are cited to analyze the options of government agreement in Italy

August 23, 2019

The 5 Star Movement (M5S) and the Democratic Party (PD) have been summoned this afternoon for a first meeting in which they intend to analyze the possibilities of forming a government and thus avoid Italy having to go to the polls after the resignation of the Prime Minister , Giuseppe Conte.

The meeting between the delegations of the two parties will take place after 2:00 pm in parliamentary units, without at the moment being clear if it will be in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate.

Both parties moved on Thursday the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, his will to try to form a new government that ends the legislature and takes over from the coalition that has ruled the country in the last 18 months, composed of the M5S and the Matteo Salvini League.

However, both formations have set conditions for the agreement. The leader of the M5S, Luigi di Maio, insists on “ten commitments with the Italians” that he wants to be respected in the new executive while the leader of the PD, Nicola Zingaretti, has also scored five essential points.

Mattarella has called a new round of contacts with political parties next Tuesday to determine the best way to resolve the current political crisis, although he has warned that elections will be inevitable if there is no majority government with “a clear program “.

“Without a solid majority, the path passes through the vote, but it is not a path that can be undertaken lightly,” the president warned Thursday.
