May 19, 2020

Nicaragua’s president, Daniel Ortega, has so far confirmed 309 pneumonia deaths this year, despite stating this within the “normal death cycle” for this diagnosis and assuring that only “a few” cases would be related to the coronavirus pandemic .

To date, the government has confirmed that 25 are infected and eight have died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new corona virus, despite doubts from the opposition and NGOs. The Citizen Observatory, which would be based on unofficial sources, has assured that more than two hundred people have already died.

Ortega, who was missing for a month in the middle of a pandemic, updated the balance of respiratory diseases this Monday and compared the data with previous years. According to Radio Nicaragua, between January 1 and May 15, 309 pneumonia deaths were registered in the country.

“Here are some that are undoubtedly related to this pandemic,” said Ortega, who has made it clear that the number hardly differs from the data collected in other years. The year with the most pneumonia deaths in the same period would have been 2016, with 329: “See without having such an epidemic.”
