For the first time, representatives of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), the Central Council of Jews in Germany and the Central Council of Sinti and German Roma called together this Sunday at the Auschwitz death camp in Poland to kill the people there.
During the event, the participants remembered the Shoah – the murder of European Jews – and the genocide of Sinti and Roma and placed wreaths on the construction site.
EKD President Heinrich Bedford-Strohm said that it will never be possible to understand how people can do this to other people.
“Even centuries-old Christian anti-Judaism, as we Christians find it with great shame, has fueled murderous anti-Semitism. That is why this commemoration is a very moving sign for me today,” he said.
