The Chinese authorities said this Wednesday that the United States’ withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) is just another example of Washington’s “unilateralism” that will only “damage the fight against the coronavirus pandemic” at an international level .
At a press conference, the spokesman for the Asian giant’s foreign ministry, Zhao Lijian, claimed the “fundamental” and “irreplaceable” role of WHO in coordinating global action to “end the coronavirus”. .
He therefore regretted and rejected the United States’ decision, pointing out that this is a new case of “cowardice” against international treaties and organizations. “Now that the fight against COVID-19 is at a crucial moment, there is an international consensus that WHO support supports collaboration and saves lives.”
For Zhao, the United States’ exit from the WHO will “undermine the fight against the pandemic”, which “will have serious repercussions for developing countries in need of support”. In this context, he asked Washington to “fulfill its international responsibilities and obligations and to behave correctly”.
