The Chinese Ministry of Health reported 42 new cases of COVID-19 in the mainland this Saturday. In doing so, 20 of these positive cases were identified as asymptomatic and multiple outbreaks of overt community transmission were sustained.
Local infections mainly correspond to the Xinijiang region, where several more cases have been added to the wave of infections detected by authorities in recent days. According to the Xinhua agency, a case was also found in the Canton region in the south of the country.
The Ministry of Health has recorded 84,808 cases of COVID-19 in the mainland excluding Hong Kong, of which 655 are receiving medical attention and 36 are in severe condition. At least 4,634 patients have died, although no deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours.
The government has since doubled its alerts for the start of the new academic semester, which is slated for September. The ministries of education and health have urged authorities and families to “take their responsibility” to prevent classes from becoming a new risk factor.
In an official note, they asked the education centers to stock up on disinfectants, masks and gloves and to clean the facilities regularly. In addition, they recommended reducing the number of indoor acts and adjusting the comedy lessons so that as few students as possible coincide.
