China issues travel warning for Australia and warns of “growing racism” in the country

June 8, 2020

The Chinese authorities issued a travel warning for Australia on Monday after warning of “increasing racism” in the country as tensions between Beijing and Canberra escalate.

“There has been a lot of discrimination against the Asian and Chinese people in Australia recently,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said during a press conference. “Many Chinese are insulted in Australia, some have even been attacked in cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane,” he complained.

Tensions between the two countries have recently increased on several fronts. One of the main problems is Australia’s insistence on an independent investigation into the development of the coronavirus, which was first discovered in Wuhan City in December 2019.

Due to restrictions and border closings imposed by the Australian government due to the coronavirus pandemic, China’s travel warning is symbolic for practical reasons.
