The Chinese Ministry of Health has reported that 37 new cases of coronavirus have been discovered in the past 24 hours, 27 of them in the Xinjiang region, home to the Uighur Muslim minority who have closed their capital, Urumqi, for more than two weeks for a surge in infections .
In addition to the 27 from Xinjiang, three more cases of locally transmitted COVID-19 have been confirmed while the rest, seven, correspond to infections from overseas. Of the latter, five were reported in Shanghai and two more in Shandong and Shaanxi.
China’s balance is 84,528 infected and 2,110 cases from abroad. The Chinese health authorities have also registered 20 new asymptomatic cases, seven of them from abroad. So far, China has found 282 asymptomatic cases, including 117 imported ones.
On the flip side, there was no record of new deaths from COVID-19 this Wednesday, so the death toll from the disease remains stable at 4,634.
In total, 79,057 people in China have recovered from COVID-19, but 837 people are still receiving medical care, 34 of them in severe condition. Finally, 474 people who had close contact with an infected person completed their medical observation in the past 24 hours and 23,985 are still under surveillance.
