Chinese authorities on Wednesday condemned US Health Secretary Alex Azar’s historic visit to Taiwan, warning that those who “play with fire will end up on fire”.
After the highest visit by a US official to the island since 1979, Beijing has declared its “complete opposition to the diplomatic exchanges between Taiwan and the United States”. So he insisted that there was no acceptable “pretext” for doing this.
“In matters affecting the main interests of China, some people should have no illusions; those who play with fire end up on fire,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a press conference.
He reminded the Taiwanese authorities that “they do not have the support of third countries” and that they are failing to attempt to achieve independence: “It is a dead end.”
