Chaos on the border between Austria and Slovenia after the new Austrian restrictions against Covid-19

August 23, 2020

Hundreds of tourists have been paralyzed at the Slovenian-Austrian border for more than 12 hours after the Vienna government introduced stricter entry controls to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

A new regulation was issued on Saturday due to increasing infections in Croatia. All travelers who have been to Croatia and want to travel through Austria to reach their home countries must now register with the health authorities at the border.

Tourists were surprised.

A German traveler told the data protection authority that he had tried to search the Internet for possible new travel guidelines before starting his return trip from Croatia.

“We didn’t see that anywhere,” he complained about the new traffic rule and after spending 14 hours in traffic before coming to Austria.

Austrian police have confirmed that their hotline has received calls from disgruntled travelers all night.
