China’s judiciary sentenced Canadian citizen Xu Weihong to death on Thursday for producing ketamine, the CBC TV station reported.
The Guangzhou Intermediate Court upheld the news, stating that his alleged accomplice, identified as Wen Guanxiong, was also sentenced, although the sentence was less severe.
In a statement, the court indicated that in October 2016 the two defendants collected the ingredients and tools needed to make ketamine and then stored the drug at Xu’s in Guangzhou’s Haizhu district. The security forces confiscated 120 kilos of the drug after a raid on the house.
The verdict comes amid heightened tensions between the two countries, particularly following the arrest of tech giant Huawei’s finance director Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver in late 2018.
