Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza dies of a heart attack

Burundi’s president, Pierre Nkurunziza, died after a heart attack, the government of the African country said in a statement on Tuesday.

The 55-year-old president died of a heart attack on Monday in a hospital in the city of Karusi, confirming the information from two Belgian newspapers that he was admitted to the city.

Nkurunziza was due to hand the baton over to his dolphin, General Evariste Ndayishimiye, who had won the recent presidential election and held the post since 2005.
