This Sunday, El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, authorized the national police and army to use “lethal force” to defend the population and fight the country’s gangs. This coincides with one of the weekends where most of the murders have been committed by these gangs since taking office in June 2019.
“The use of lethal violence is permitted to defend yourself or to defend the life of the Salvadorans,” Bukele wrote on his Twitter account, where he also confirmed that the government would take legal action to defend those people “wrongfully accused” to defend the lives of honest people “.
Bukele ordered the prison directorate to order a maximum state of emergency in prisons over the weekend after the number of murders, of which at least 40 have been committed in the last 72 hours and which are accused of gangs.
For this reason, the Salvadoran president has ordered prisoners to be closed completely for 24 hours, without being able to leave their cells to try and avoid contact with the outside world.
