The European Commission opened the application for the program for free travel in Europe for young people between 18 and 20 years old this Monday as part of the DiscoverEU program, which aims to promote a feeling of unity and solidarity in the European Union.
Young Europeans can apply for their vouchers until October 26th, a proposal from Brussels to offer 60,000 tickets for cross-border travel through Europe, the largest tender to date. The activity can be done in groups of up to five people, with a maximum duration of 30 days and between March 2022 and February 2023.
In addition to green mobility, the program, which started in 2018, aims at intercultural exchange and learning. Ultimately, the initiative is a way to encourage young Europeans to travel by rail and to promote sustainable tourism within the framework of the European Green Deal. Although the train is mainly promoted, citizens of islands or remote locations are allowed to use ferries or airplanes.
European Lifestyle Vice-President Margaritis Schinas has indicated that with this initiative, the European Executive has “boomed” the mobility of young people and highlighted the role of this social group during the pandemic of sacrificing “some crucial moments for theirs” Life”.
