The leader of the British Labor Party, Keir Starmer, called on Saturday for the resignation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson because of his “incompetence” and in the “national interest”.
Starmer has highlighted the scandal surrounding parties being held in full custody at government headquarters, saying public health has been discredited because it is “too busy defending violations” by Johnson, according to the British press.
Johnson “is not suitable for the job”. “While a large majority of the British people were following the laws the Government made, the Government and the Prime Minister were celebrating at Downing Street,” he said.
There was also a serious wake-up call from Johnson’s Conservative Bank. “We need leadership. Lead or step aside,” said Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood on Saturday.
For Ellwood, Johnson’s future as PM is “unsustainable” because of his “pattern of behavior”. “His circle could do what they wanted while the rest of us had to obey the law,” he accused.
According to the Daily Telegraph, two celebrations came together in Downing Street on April 16, 2021, at a time when indoor gatherings between non-cohabiting people were banned. The next day, Queen Elizabeth II sat alone at her husband’s funeral; one of the symbolic images of the COVID-19 pandemic.
