A British citizen, Ishak Mostefaui, who is a member of the Islamic State, died in custody of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDS) in Syria, according to the BBC.
London-born Mostefaui has been reported to have been killed when, according to one source, he tries to flee while another source points to an uprising in the school Hasakah prison he was in.
The 27-year-old man was arrested last year by the SDS, a coalition of Syrian-Arab and Kurdish forces that control the country’s northeast. The SDS were the shocking force behind the US-backed offensive against the Islamic State in the region.
This is the first Briton from the Islamic State to die in custody. An estimated 10 British men and 30 women are in SDS detention.
The SDS has asked countries of origin to return foreigners who have joined the Islamic State, but countries like the United Kingdom officially claim that they should be brought to justice for their crimes in Syria. They unofficially acknowledge that they pose a security risk.
