British security forces arrested two men suspected of terrorism at an airport on the outskirts of London after two Air Force fighters escorted the plane they were traveling in from Vienna to the English city of Essex.
The police identified the detainees as 34-year-old Kuwaiti and 48-year-old Italian. Both were on a Ryanair flight, which has confirmed that the crew has discovered a “potential security threat on board,” according to the BBC. .
“Following the procedures, the captain informed the UK authorities and proceeded to London Stansted, where the plane landed normally and arrived in a remote area where passengers could disembark safely,” said an airline spokesman.
The authorities did not provide any details on the incident, although a passenger quoted by the Daily Express confirmed that there were “suspicious items” in the aircraft’s bathroom.
