The UK government has confirmed approximately 700 cases and more than 110 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, a significant increase from the previous day.
The UK Department of Health said 687 new infections and 114 deaths were registered on the last day, a total of 293,239 and 45,233, respectively. The number stands in contrast to 650 cases and 66 deaths on Thursday.
England remains the most affected area with 252,117 cases and 40,640 deaths. Scotland is behind with 18,401 and 2,491; Wales with 16,887 and 1,546; and Northern Ireland with 5,834 and 556 according to the Department.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised Wednesday that his government would launch an independent investigation into the management of the coronavirus pandemic.
Johnson has come under fire for refusing to use detention and other restrictions in the early stages of the country’s pandemic. The “premier” himself tested positive for coronavirus on March 29 and was subsequently taken to the intensive care unit, although he was released days later.
