EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell this Tuesday entrusted the Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Unity, Fayed Serraj, with EU support for a dialogue solution to the conflict in Libya.
On his first trip to Libya, the head of European diplomacy met with the internationally recognized executive leader, before whom he affirmed that the Libyan crisis was still a “priority” for the EU. “We welcome the ceasefire and continue to support dialogue for a political solution to the conflict,” the High Representative said in a message posted on his Twitter account.
At the meeting in Tripoli, Borrell and Serraj discussed how the political process to resolve the crisis can be advanced and how the 5 + 5 format of the talks of the Joint Military Commission can be restored and the blockade on oil exports lifted.
“The EU strongly supports the Berlin process, measures to de-escalate the conflict and to mediate the crisis,” said the head of Community diplomacy, who also defended the arms embargo against Libya, which the EU controls the military mission ‘Irini’. “All are key elements in ending the Libyan conflict,” he summarized.
