Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro added gyms, hairdressers, and beauty and manicure salons to the list of essential services on Monday without first consulting with Secretary of Health Nelson Teich, who was surprised to find out the news of the journalists.
“Well, seeing this as essential is a first step that the president has decided. He made the decision. Did that come out today? Did he speak now?” Asked Teich, the journalists who consulted him about this decision, announced this Bolsonaro to the media at the gates of the Alvorada Palace.
“Decision by? What … manicure centers, gyms? That didn’t happen … It’s not our attribution. This is a decision by the President,” said Teich, who had to consult with journalists in attendance to discuss his appearance to report the situation of the pandemic that other Bolsonaro companies themselves decided to include in the main sectors.
After the first surprise, Teich explained that it was not up to his portfolio to decide which companies received the essential label, but to the Ministry of Economy. They, he said, only help “find the way to protect people”.
