Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro officially announced the dismissal of Federal Police Director-General Maurício Leite Valeixo on Friday in an apparent fight with Justice Minister Sergio Moro, who would even have threatened to resign.
The decree signed by Bolsonaro and Moro is published in the Official Journal of the Union. The text does not mention the new chief of police, although the president would now try to involve a closer relative.
Bolsonaro informed the Minister of Justice of the departure during a meeting that took place both on Thursday and which, according to several Brazilian media, expressed his discomfort, even until the resignation was presented.
The president already announced in 2019 that he would change the leadership of the federal police in order to gain better control over the state agency. The police leadership opposed a change in Rio de Janeiro’s headquarters that the president proclaimed publicly.
