June 5, 2020

Bolivia’s self-appointed interim president, Jeanine Áñez, announced on Thursday the abolition of three ministries and two embassies to increase funds to fight the Coronavirus in the Andean nation and strengthen its health system.

In particular, the Ministries of Sport and Culture will now be handed over to the Ministry of Education, while the Ministry of Communication will report to the Presidency. “All the money from this reduction will go to health and the fight against the virus,” Áñez told the Bolivian press.

The Bolivian government will also close its embassies in Iran and Nicaragua. “We have nothing against these countries, noble peoples and brothers who we respect and who are friends, but the decision is aimed at saving and investing these savings in health and against COVID-19,” he emphasized.

According to Áñez, he ordered the Cabinet of Ministers to “review” in detail “all unnecessary charges and all absurd expenditures that the Socialist Movement (MAS) invented and were wasted”. This money is also used to fight the pandemic.
