The Bolivian Ministry of Health confirmed a total of 6,263 cases of the new coronavirus this Sunday, while the number of deaths has increased to 250. These are very small numbers compared to the expectations of the health authorities themselves that the country will reach them. Around 28,000 positive and around 800 deaths when the pandemic peaks in June.

“In our projection, we’re talking about nearly 28,000 climax cases, we can estimate about 800 deaths,” said Virgilio Prieto, National Director of Epidemiology at the Department of Health, repeated the Bolivian newspaper ‘La Razón’ during an interview for state television.

Prieto’s calculations contradict the downward projections of previously dismissed Minister of Health Marcelo Navajas due to the scandal of cost overruns for respirators, which assured the country would have around 10,000 confirmed cases by June.

With that in mind, Prieto emphasized that cases double every week, such as in Beni and Santa Cruz departments, with the latter showing almost 4,200 confirmed positive results and their mandatory quarantine extended until May 31.
