MADRID, Dec. 28 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The former US vice president and candidate for the Democratic Party primaries, Joe Biden, said Friday that he will not testify in the 'impeachment' in the Senate against the president, Donald Trump, if he is called for it.
“I will not do it because everything is designed as Trump has done throughout his life: trying to divert attention from himself. The issue at hand is not what I did,” said Biden, in statements collected by the newspaper 'The New York Times'.
The former vice president has said that it is a “distraction”, to which he added that the reasons why he would be called to testify in the impeachment against Trump would be “absolutely misleading.”
Therefore, he has reiterated that Republicans want their testimony to “divert attention” on the actions Trump has taken in front of the White House.
Biden's statements take place after the US House of Representatives approved opening an 'impeachment' in the Senate against Trump, who will thus become the third president of the country to face a political trial.
With 230 Democratic votes in favor, 197 against (195 Republicans and two Democrats) and a single abstention, that of Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, the charges filed against her for abuse of power and obstruction of justice went ahead.
The Judicial Commission accused Trump of a charge of abuse of power for pressuring his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelenski, to open two investigations that would benefit him for reelection in 2020: one on the alleged corrupts of the Democratic candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter in his business in Ukraine and another on “the discredited theory” that it was that country, not Russia, that interfered in the 2016 elections.
Trump is also accused of a second charge of obstruction to Congress for rejecting the requirements made by the House of Representatives for both information and appearance in the context of the impeachment investigation.
For its part, the White House said that this decision was “one of the most unfortunate episodes in American history.” “Without receiving a single Republican vote and without proving that any type of crime is incurred, the Democrats have taken illegitimate charges against the president in the House of Representatives,” they said.
