Belarusian opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova imprisoned on the Belarusian border with Ukraine

Belarusian opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova was arrested at dawn on Tuesday on the Belarusian border with Ukraine as she was preparing to leave the country, a Belarusian border guard confirmed to the digital newspaper Tut.

Anton Bichkovski, head of the Belarusian Border Guard, has confirmed the arrest of Kolesnikova, one of the most prominent figures of the Belarusian opposition since the beginning of the massive demonstrations in protest against the alleged fraud in the August 9th presidential election.

Kolesnikova was arrested by border guards when she was about to leave Belarus, accompanied by the spokesman for the Coordinating Council of the opposition, Anton Rodnenkov, and Ivan Kravtsov, executive secretary of the same opposition body.

The three opposition leaders attempted to cross the Belarusian border into Ukraine in a BMW car at 5 a.m. on Tuesday and were arrested after the vehicle accelerated when it saw a soldier, according to the Belarusian Border Guard.
