The military exercises announced for the Grodno region in the far west of the country bordering Poland and Lithuania began on this Sunday.
The Ministry of Defense has reported that the maneuvers involving tanks, armored transports, paratroopers, artillery, engineers, unmanned aerial systems and electronic warfare under the command of General Viktor Gulevich have “entered an active phase”. reports the official BelTA news agency.
The maneuvers serve to rehearse “defensive actions in Grodno” following warnings from President Alexander Lukashenko, who denounced Poland’s annexing intentions to exploit the opposition protests in Belarus. The Ukrainian government has also denounced the deployment of NATO forces to the border.
In particular, the Belarusian armed forces are preparing to block and destroy reconnaissance and sabotage groups, as well as enemy armed formations with the 103rd Vitebsk Airborne Brigade. On the first day the operation focuses on the border and on the second on the defense of the Neman River with tanks. The exercises will end on Monday, August 31st.
