Beijing suspends the US-Hong Kong mutual legal assistance agreement in response to Washington

China on Thursday announced the suspension of the mutual legal assistance agreement between the United States and Hong Kong after Washington also suspended three agreements with the territory.

This was announced by the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian at the daily press conference condemning the Asian giant’s “interference by the White House in internal affairs”.

Zhao has accused the Donald Trump administration of using Hong Kong as a farmer in the fight against China, both commercially and politically, and has shown “a lack of respect for bilateralism and multilateralism”.

Mutual assistance agreements are designed to ensure effective judicial and police cooperation, for example by interrogating people who are suspected in one country but found in another.
