Austria is supposed to turn Hitler’s birthplace into a police station

June 2, 2020

The Austrian authorities have decided to convert the house where the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was born into a police station, as the Austrian interior minister Karl Nehammer announced in Vienna on Tuesday.

The government’s decision ended a long tug of war over the use of the house in which Hitler was born and which is located in the Austrian city of Braunau am Inn. Nehammer has announced that all changes made by the Nazis to the facade of the building will be removed.

In addition, he pointed out that there would be no room or monument. “It took Austria a long time to confront history itself, but now we are on the right path,” he emphasized.

Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) spent the first months of his life in this building and became the leader of Nazi Germany years later. The reform of the building is intended to prevent the area from becoming a place of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis. The memorial stone in front of the house will probably be brought to a museum.
