The Austrian government announced this Friday that it would tighten restrictions to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, including reducing capacity at public events and expanding the requirement to wear masks in shops across the country, now only in areas with the most infections used.
From Monday onwards, a maximum of 1,500 of the current 5,000 participants can take part in events with closed doors, while the number in the open air will decrease from 10,000 to 3,000. In terms of hospitality, bars are only allowed to serve customers at the table.
Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has announced that the new measures will generally come into force throughout the winter. “We are in the middle of a pandemic,” emphasized the Austrian head of government after the daily infections have doubled in the last two weeks and are around 600.
