Austria confirms a new record of COVID-19 infections, more than 17,000 in the last 24 hours

The Austrian health authorities registered a total of 17,006 COVID-19 infections on the last day, a record number of daily cases since the beginning of the pandemic as part of a rebound in cases that can be traced back to the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

In addition, ten more people died of the disease in Austria, so that, according to official information, the total number has risen to 1,378,747 infected and 13,882 deceased.

In hospitals, however, the situation remains stable. Currently, 242 people are admitted to intensive care units in Austria, 14 fewer than on Tuesday.

Regarding vaccination, 70.1 percent of the Austrian population have the complete scheme, while 43.9 percent have also received the booster dose of the serum.

The Austrian Health Minister Wolfgang Muckstein has warned that the pandemic will continue to “accompany” the public. “The virus has been our companion for two years,” he said, before highlighting the effects of the pandemic on psychosocial health, especially among “the youngest”, according to the newspaper “Der Standard”.

Because of the renewed increase in infections, new restrictions have applied in the European country since Tuesday. It highlights the obligation to wear FFP2 masks outdoors when social distance is not an option.
