The Australian authorities warned on Wednesday that the country had the worst daily record of coronavirus cases and deaths since the pandemic started, with 740 new infections and 15 deaths, most of them in the state of Victoria.
According to the Department of Health, 725 of the 740 cases found on the last day were registered in Victoria, as were the fifteen deaths. These two numbers represent a record at both local and national levels, as evidenced by information from The Sydney Morning Herald.
Head of state Daniel Andrews also regretted that one of these victims is a 30-year-old man, the youngest victim of the virus in the country. The number of fatalities in the state of Victoria is now 162, a number that increases to 247 nationwide.
For more than a month, the state has registered a high number of daily infections as part of a second wave focused on the city of Melbourne that started in late June.
