May 25, 2020

At least ten people have died in a gunfight between local armed forces that were loyal to two local militia commanders in Tajar province in northeastern Afghanistan.

The shootout took place in the Kalafgan district of Tajar province and injured five people, a regional government spokesman said. Provincial Council member Mir Ahmad Qasim confirmed the shootout and assured the data protection agency that at least nine dead and nine wounded remained.

The shootout ended when the district security forces were deployed. A local official said it was not yet known why the shooting started, but found that the two local commanders have long been rivals.

Local commanders who have led militant groups outside the government’s security forces have been a source of instability and criminal activity in the province for years, according to regional authorities.
