At least four people have died in a fire recorded this Friday morning in the wing for coronavirus patients of a hospital in the city of Aracacju in the northeastern state of Sergipe.
A spokesman for the city health minister said in statements to the G1 news portal that the fire in Doctor Néstor Piva’s hospital started at 6:30 a.m.
One of the victims is a woman who would have been affected by the fire after being transferred from the hospital. Authorities have not yet clarified the circumstances of the other three deaths and have not disclosed the identity of the deceased.
Approximately 60 patients were in the unit affected by the flames. Of these patients, 35 were transferred to various hospitals including Santa Isabel, Senhor dos Passos, Primavera, Hapvida and Fernando Franco.
According to the fire department, the fire has already been brought under control. The main hypothesis dealt with by the authorities indicates a problem in the air conditioning system. About twenty firefighters work in the area.
“This fire can be considered because of the consequences of large proportions. The biggest problem was the amount of smoke accumulated in the coronavirus area and the withdrawal of the bedridden victims,” said Breno Queiroz of the Corps of Firemen.
