At least 19 people were killed in a series of attacks by militiamen against cities in the Congolese region of Ituri on Sunday. This is evident from local sources that have attributed the attacks to the CODECO group (Cooperativa para el Desarrollo de Congo).
The attacks began early Sunday morning in the cities of Tchulu, Lisey and Aloize. According to sources consulted by Radio Okapi, the population fled in all directions before the attack until the attacked areas remained empty.
A local official has urged the DRC government armed forces to step up their efforts to prevent this type of incident from happening again. Groups of Kilo soldiers had already arrived in the area to try to track down the attackers.
At least 1,750 people died in the first half of the year as a result of attacks by armed groups in Ituri province. This comes from a balance published on July 1st by civil society organizations in this part of the African country.
