At least 18 dead in attack by armed men on mosque in western Nigeria

At least 18 people have been killed in an attack by armed men on a mosque in Mashegu municipal council in Niger state in western Nigeria, local media reported.

The event took place on Monday at dawn when several men broke into the Maza-Kuka community in Mashegu and shot the residents who were saying their morning prayers in a mosque, according to the Nigerian portal “The Guardian”.

The State Secretary of Niger State Ahmed Matane has announced that the authorities have dispatched a military team to the area to track down the perpetrators of the attack.

On the other hand, the governor of the state of Bauchi, Bala Mohamed, announced cases of kidnappings and fatal assaults, including by armed groups, in six of his local councils.

Mohamed has also expressed concern about an alleged “collusion of terrorists with government officials” to commit the crimes.

On the other hand, this Sunday the troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled attacks by the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) in the municipality of Katarko in the Gujba council in Yobe state.
