Afghanistan’s President, Ashraf Ghani, and ex-director general and major political rival Abdulá Abdulá signed an expected agreement on Sunday to end months of internal tensions after the dispute over the outcome of the controversial 2019 presidential election.

“The political agreement between President Ghani and Dr. Abdulá Abdulá has just been signed,” said Afghan Presidency spokesman Sadiq Sediqqi via Twitter.

Abdulá will lead the so-called High Council for National Reconciliation and several members of his team will be admitted to the cabinet of ministers, the spokesman added.
