Armed men kill two Hungarian Action cooperators in western d – EUROPA PRESS
MADRID, Sep. 6 (EUROPE PRESS) –
Unidentified armed men have killed two Hungarian Action cooperators when they were returning from a refugee camp in a region of western Ethiopia near the border with South Sudan, the non-governmental organization reported.
The attack took place on Thursday in the Gambella region, located along the border with South Sudan, when ACH staff returned from a child nutrition center in the Nguenyyiel refugee camp.
“With great sadness, ACH has confirmed that two of our workers have died in the Gambella region of Ethiopia,” said the NGO, in a statement published late Thursday.
In its brief, ACH has said that workers were in transit from the 24-hour Nutrition Stabilization Center at the Nguenyyiel refugee camp “when they were ambushed by armed men.”
“Two employees died at the scene. Action Against Hunger has suspended all of its operations in Gambella but maintains the provision of life-saving help,” he added. Nguenyyiel camp hosts more than 74,000 refugees from South Sudan, according to UNHCR data.
The refugees are part of the 2.3 million people who have fled South Sudan since 2013, when a civil war began in the country, just two years after it gained independence from Sudan.
The conflict has killed 400,000 people and forced 1.8 million people to leave their homes, leaving them as internally displaced and has caused a reduction in oil production, the country's main resource.
“I trust that Ethiopian authorities arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack,” United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Ethiopia, Steven Were, said in a statement, Reuters reports.
