Áñez dismisses the Minister of Health due to the additional cost of the respiratory equipment purchased to deal with the corona virus

May 20, 2020

Interim President of Bolivia, Jeanine Áñez, announced on Wednesday that she had released the Coronavirus pandemic to Health Minister Marcelo Navajas due to the controversy surrounding the alleged cost overruns when buying a batch of 170 respirators from a Spanish company.

Áñez has therefore decided to remove all persons currently under investigation by the police from his position in order to “avoid any interference in the work of the judiciary”.

The functions that the Navajas initially and temporarily performed will be taken over by the Deputy Minister of Health Heidi Roca. “The government will not allow corruption or mismanagement of public resources, worse in the midst of the health emergency the country is going through,” said Áñez.

For his part, Navajas is in the dependencies of the Special Force to Fight Crime (FELCC) after his arrest. Over the next few hours, he is expected to make his statement and clarify his legal situation, as reported by the local newspaper ‘El Debe’.
