The death toll from attacks by suspected members of the Congo Development Militia (CODECO) in Ituri province, northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) on Wednesday has increased to almost 40, as confirmed by the authorities.

Security sources cited by Congolese radio broadcaster Radio Okapi have shown that a total of 37 people were killed in the attack on the village of Bunzenele in the Djugu area, which has been hardest hit by the operations of this armed group.

They also warned that the death toll could increase as several people were injured and fled to a forest area in the area where they have no medication or medical care.
