Agents intercept a letter addressed to Trump containing ricin poison

September 20, 2020

The US authorities intercepted a letter containing ricin poison earlier this week and, according to US press reports, it was addressed to US President Donald Trump with reference to two agents.

The presence of ricin, a very toxic substance extracted from castor beans, has been confirmed by two tests. All mail from the White House is sorted and analyzed in an off-site facility before it reaches the official residence and main work place of the President of the United States.

The US Federal Police (FBI) and the secret service are already investigating a so-called “mysterious letter”. “There is currently no known threat to public security,” said the police in a statement published on the social network Twitter.

Ricin, which can be in the form of powder, granules, mist or acid, has been used in terrorist attacks. If swallowed, it causes nausea, vomiting and internal bleeding in the stomach and intestines. These symptoms are followed by liver and kidney failure and ultimately death from the breakdown of the circulatory system.
