Activists are calling for the release of two lawyers detained in Turkey who are in critical condition due to the hunger strike

August 22, 2020

Human rights groups and bar associations have called for the release of two Turkish lawyers who have been on hunger strike since February and are now in critical condition.

The lawyers Ebru Timtik and Aytac Unsal are protesting against the prison terms imposed for belonging to a terrorist group.

In 2019, an Istanbul court sentenced Unsal to more than 10 years and Timtik to more than 13 years for alleged links to the left-wing People’s Liberation of the Revolutionary Front Party (DHKP-C), which has been identified as a terrorist organization in Turkey.

“After 200 days of hunger strike we are very concerned about Ebru Timtik and Aytac Unsal,” said Irma van den Berg from the NGO Lawyers for Lawyers.
