At least 17 American Christian missionaries and their families were kidnapped by a criminal gang this Saturday in Haiti, according to the American newspaper “The New York Times”, citing Haitian security officials.
The Americans were pulled from a bus in Port-au-Prince going to the airport. The country’s authorities confirmed that those affected include children and women.
A few days ago, the US administration announced that it would provide $ 15 million – around EUR 13 million – to help “reduce violence” in Haiti and to guarantee the implementation of the law.
The country is in a state of instability made worse by the aftermath of the August 14 earthquake that left more than 2,000 dead and the assassination of the country’s President Jovenel Moise on July 7th.
According to the NGO Action Against Hunger, more than four million people in the country depend on humanitarian aid to eat or to meet their basic needs.
