Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned Friday that anti-racist protests in the country were “kidnapped by violent extremists” and asked the population not to take part in the demonstrations.

“The only way to act is to stay away from the protests,” Johnson said in a message posted on his Twitter account. The president also regretted that former Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s statue in central London was damaged during the protests.

“It is absurd and terrible that this national monument could be attacked by violent demonstrators,” said Johnson. The statue is now boarded up after a group of protesters graffiti labeled “Was a Racist” on the statue.
