TAIPEI, Oct. 26 (DPA / EP) –
Some 200,000 people have participated this Saturday in the march of the Pride of Taipei, the first in Taiwan since the approval of the same-sex marriage five months ago. In the march the rainbow flags and messages such as “Good neighbors”, “Love” or “Diversity” have predominated.
The march, convened by more than 200 organizations under the motto “Gays are good neighbors,” has culminated in front of the headquarters of the Presidency of Taiwan.
“We have done a great job with the legalization of same-sex marriage,” said Ken Tsai, a Tainan neighbor who has moved to Taipei with his same-sex partner to participate in the march. “We must coordinate to address related issues step by step,” he argued.
Thus, the conveners claim interventions on issues such as education for gender equality or the extension of rights for couples in same-sex marriages, since Taiwanese citizens can only marry foreign citizens of the same sex in whose countries are also legal gay marriage, as denounced by the Taiwan Alliance to Promote the Civil Rights of Couples.
“In Taipei you can go out on the street, be yourself and be proud of who you are,” explained a Chilean resident in Bangkok, Camilo Viñales, 29, who has traveled to Taipei to participate in the demonstration, considered the most important from Asia.
