May 23, 2020

A 23-year-old Afghan woman was stabbed by another woman, also an Afghan woman, during a brawl at the reception and identification center of the crowded Moria migrant camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, as Greek police confirmed to the ERT state chain.

The incident occurred last Friday evening and the person responsible for the crime fled to the surrounding hills, but was later arrested in the early morning. According to initial investigations, the incident started due to a dispute between the children of the two women who lived in neighboring shops.

The authorities have now taken the two families to other places, the local news portal Politalesvos reported.

Moria’s camp is crowded, and disputes between people living in crowded conditions, sometimes in huts and under plastic wrap, are common. According to the latest figures, around 17,000 people live in and around the camp with an official capacity of 2,757 inhabitants.

Aid agencies and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have for years called for the camp to be closed and people to be accommodated more comfortably.
